This little illustration “Birch Forest” only recently made it up onto my website.
I wanted to create a serene snow scene for some christmas products, and the final version ended up being changed around a lot but I couldn’t help but fall in love with this version of it. There were no birch trees in Minneapolis, where I lived while I was at college, but we did have the gorgeous snow fall. Somedays you’d wake up and the whole campus was turned into a winter wonderland right out of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
Of course being a California girl, the first time I saw snow in Minneapolis I thought it was raining ash from the sky… but the wonder of watching the snowflakes fall gently to the ground never lost it’s beauty to me. In fact, I regularly miss the snow during winter time. I miss the layers of jackets and scarves and the wonderful relief when you walked into the coffee shop to grab a hot drink after a long day in the studio. I miss taking the time to photograph my walks back to my apartment, or breathing in the brisk clean air. It was truly magical, even when the weather was at it’s harshest.
